Dylan had straddled his motorcycle over three hours ago in order to ride out to Professor Hide's Pokemon Laboratory in order to get his starter from the good doctor, and now his legs and butt were starting to hurt.
Finally, just as he was contemplating a break from the ride, the lab started to come into veiw. He pulled into the driveway and shut off the bike, slamming down the kickstand as he did so. As he walked up to the front door he did so with confidence. He had put alot of thought into his starter and he had finally decided on an Onix. He didn't have a single rock type pokemon on his last adventure and thought that was a total shame. He settled on the 30 foot RockSnake after a couple weeks of researching bacis pokemon at his father's Gym in New Viridian City, and of course, after he saw two of them battle it out at the gym.
He knocked on the door, reaching his hand into his jacket to touch the pokeball containing his Eevee, Esteban. Just to make sure it was still there.

Professor Hide didn't make Dylan wait too long. The door swung open, revealing the smiling face of the young woman to him. A Lucario stood solemnly in the shadows, head facing to the floor but somehow it felt as though his eyes were looking up. However, that couldn't be told while he was still in the dark. Hide smiled. "Hello, there! Here for your starter? Yes, yes, come right this way." she said, opening the door wider to admit Dylan.
As the door widened, light filtering in shone on the Lucario. Yes, his eyes were indeed fixed on the man with the motocycle. He flinched as he was exposed, shuffling back into the darkness. Before he did, however, it was hard not to notice that his coat was blue and red, odd colours. Hide looked at him, then back to Dylan. "That's Optimus. He's a little grumpy today, and wants to keep to himself." she explained, before changing the subject. "Have you decided on a starter to choose?" she asked.

Dylan looked at the aura pokemon with little scrutiny, he had probably seen the same one last time he was at this Lab. He looked away from the Lucario when Prof. Hide asked him about his starter choice. "Yes," He smiled. "I have thought pretty hard about it and I would like to have an Onix as my starter. That is if you have any. I've noticed that people tend to choose smaller and cuter pokemon to start off with."

Hide smiled at his request. Onix, eh? That was indeed an unusual choice of starter, but hey. It was Dylan's decision, after all, and if it was an Onix he wanted, it was an Onix he'd get. "Onix? We have plenty of Onix. In fact, so many that we had to stop breeding them, since a few were coming in but none were coming out. You're right about the smaller and cuter. Loads of people ask for Pichu, or something cool or strong and well-known like Riolu." she nodded, agreeing with him. In fact, she was pretty certain that Onix were the largest Pokémon she gave out as starters.
After a little rumaging around in a draw, Hide produced two Pokéballs. She smiled to Dylan. "You're in luck." she said, "We have a couple of shinies." she said, holding up the Pokéball in her left hand. Sure enough, the lable on that said 'Shiny Onix'. She held out the two Pokéballs. "The left Pokéball is a shiny Onix, the right a normal Onix. Which one will you take?" she asked.

A free Shiny Pokemon? Dylan was willing to bet his hair that those didn't come around very often and immediatly reached his hand towards the left pokeball. He stopped himself. One of the reasons he had chosen Onix was to give a pokemon that has less of a chance to get a good home a chance to leave the confinces of a Laboratory. And now he was feeling guilty for wanting the rarer of the two, like having a shiny pokemon somehow would improve his status as trainer, or the shiny would be much better than a regular Onix. He sighed. Dylan would love to give both pokemon a home, but knew that he could only walk away with one. He sighed. "Which of them has a higher chance of being taken?" Dylan wanted to do his best to make sure that a pokemon wouldn't spend it's life cooped up in a lab, just because it was less desirable than another.

Hide thought about that for a moment. Well, it was probably the shiny, right? She smiled at him. Optimus made her jump at that moment by resting a hand on her shoulder. He chuckled at her reaction, before locking eyes with Dylan. +The shiny+ a voice seemed to echo into Dylan's head. Hide sighed. "Optimus, you've gotta stop doing that. Some of the new trainers get creeped out; they haven't heard telepathy before." she said, tutting. Optimus' eyes appeared to be shining with mirth. +Don't fret, Prof. Child, everyone wants a shiny. Although some people won't like the shiny colour of Onix, and some won't care, it's definately the shiny that will be picked first.+ the Lucario spoke. Well, the choice was all down to Dylan now.

Dylan looked down at the Lucario when it 'spoke' to him. He wasn't really startled, in fact he had heard numerous pokemon talk to him like this before, he just didn't think that this particular specimen liked to talk. "Yes, I had assumed that would be the case." He straightened up, brushing his hair behind his ear. "I'd like the regular Onix, please."

Professor Hide nodded slowly, pressing the Pokéball in her right hand, the one containing the normally coloured Onix, into Dylan's palm with a smile. Interesting. Most people would have gone for the shiny Onix, of course. Well, she had suspected that Dylan would choose the normal when he'd asked which Pokémon was most likely to be picked after the one he chose. Well, with the toughest decision of probably his entire journey now thankfully behind him, Dylan was ready to move on to the first route. Hide nodded to him, handing him the starter's items on his way out. "Well, good luck, kid! Have fun and take care!" she called after him.
Dylan recieved his starter's stuff!
