Nox walked down the twisting passageways of the underground links between the main headquarters and the smaller ones. The project he was working for was going well. So well, in fact, that he was not needed there any more. He was only recieving his starter and doing a little fieldwork on how the outsider Pokemon were reacting, but every role was important. He just hoped his next one would be more important. He knew he was worthy; he had realised Kairi was up to something against them, and had made her talk. It had seemed so easy. He had seen many others do it, and they all ended up killing when they didn't coorporate. It was madly fun, this job.
His hand rapped on the door labeled 'Mission Recruitment'. He had already radioed the office workers telling them about the success of his last mission. They had asked him what his current party was and then told him that he should report to them for a new mission. So, Lux the Lucario with a hand on his shoulder, Nox fingered the Pokeballs on his belt containing a Pidgey, Luxio and Prinplup. Lucario and Luxio had both pleased the office workers. He stepped in the room, smiling at the man inside and giving his name. What kind of mission would he get?

Eddy 'The Bug' Jones was sweating. He was the assistant Missions Coordinator at the Team Vex base and today was his first time working without the actual Missions Coordinator. That wasn't the reason for his prolific sweating. The Boss was here.
Martyn Navarro had decided to come down to the Missions Recruitment Center to see how the young man would do on his own. In all actuality, Eddy had done this alone several times. His boss took frequent breaks that lasted as long as several hours, but he was still nervous. Some of the other Grunts had been talking about how one of the new guys had done something wrong in front of The Boss and he was never seen again.
Eddy gulped. Looking over his shoulder he could see Martyn sitting at the big desk usually reserved for the Missions Coordinator, the Boss of Team Vex was quietly going over some paperwork regarding the most recent missions. Eddy turned back to his smaller desk, looking over todays schedule. Some Grunt named Nox had been put up for reassignment and was due to come in at any moment.
Attempting to assuage his anxiety of the Boss he attempted to engage him in conversation. He cleared his throat, swivelling in his chair.
"Sir?", he asked, hoping to not upset the stern-looking man in anyway. The Boss sat up straighter in his chair and pushed his shoulder-length, sandy blond hair out of his face and behind his ear.
"Yes?", Martyn hoped this was important. There should be no other excuse for interupting his concentration. The grunt visably gulped, obviously regretting his choice to speak to the Boss.
"Sir, there is a Grunt coming in for reassignment today and I was wondering if there was any particular assignment you wanted him placed in, if that would be okay with you, um, sir" Eddy winced as these words came out of his mouth, the stupid was just spewing out of his mouth. The Boss was sure to think he's a moron that should be 'gotten rid of'.
To his surprise, Martyn didn't look angry. "See if he would be elegible for the 'Sleeper Gene' project." Eddy didn't have time to reply before the young man entered the room.
"Yes, Nox? Do come in." he indicated a chair in front of his desk that he should sit in. He pulled a small packet of stapled-together papers out of a filing cabinet behind him, and pushed it across his desk. "Please take the time to fill out this small questionaire, it will help us decide where to place within the Team."

Nox waited for the man to let him in. He heard the soft murmur of their voices, his and another man's. He wondered who the other voice belonged to. The head of missions? That would seem reasonable. He looked to Lux. The Lucario seemed to not be bothered about listening to the men. After all, it was almost definately either private, not worth hearing or going to be told to him anyway. After all, Nox trusted Team Vex to give him the good information. He smiled. Lux reflected it back, the Lucario shuffling on his feet impatiently. He was growing a little nervous now. After all, this time waiting had given him a little while to think about things. Had he really done a good job? Was his seniors impressed?
Lux' eyes remained soft and calm. ~Don't worry, Nox. You might not be in trouble, they might be impressed or something.~ he reassured his trainer, perfectly relaxed. Nox' eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Have you been listening to their thoughts? We should only listen if they want us to, Lux!" he said frantically. Lux laughed, shaking his head. ~Oh, Arceus no, I wouldn't dream of eavesdropping!~ he told Nox truthfully. The boy nodded slowly, and they continued to wait.
They weren't kept long. Nox looked at Eddy as his name was mentioned, obediently walking into the room. Lux followed him, of course. Nox sat down in the indicated seat, and grabbed a pen at the sight of the questionaire. Lux faced away. These questions were for Nox to answer, and Nox alone. The boy clicked the end of the pen, making the nib of the Biro poke out, and began scrawling down answers, before sliding it back to Eddy. He wondered what he exactly meant by 'place within the Team'. Well, he supposed he was about to find out, wasn't he?

The young Grunt started to fill out the questionaire obediently, and Eddy marked that down on his reference sheet. The way that Nox responded to the test was mostly the test. The answeres were pretty important, revealing a simple phsychological profile, but mostly to see how well the Grunt listened and if he could keep his lid shut. Eddy chuckled to himself. That Lucario could read minds, so as far as anyone could tell he was using it to cheat. He wrote that down too.
Martyn looked up for the first time at the Grunt, and saw the pokemon with him. Having the mind reader in his presense is unacceptable. He knew too much that could be leaked out, even if accidentally. He made eye contact with the pokemon.
' I know you can hear me...' he thought. his eyes turned to Nox. 'Is he using you to cheat? That would be very resourceful, but somehow I doubt it' He looked back down at his paper work and addressed the trainer. "You'll have to place your pokemon inside of it's pokeball. No psychics allowed in here anyway."

Nox bit his lip. He'd broken a rule? Oh, no! But... Lux didn't really like his Pokéball... The Lucario hadn't been reading Martyn's mind, so as a result couldn't answer, for he hadn't heard the question. He nodded to Nox. ~Nox, it's all right. I won't mind.~ he said aloud, although it was in Pokéspeak. The boy nodded, returing the Lucario to his Pokéball before looking up at Martyn. What was he doing here? Wasn't he the boss of the whole team, or something? Yikes. He really didn't want to get on his bad side.
Nox wondered what he'd be assigned. Would get a mission? What would it be? Stealing? Survelance? His thoughts went wild with possibilities. Well, there was no knowing what would happen until it happened, so he should just wait for Martyn to do what was need. He muttered an apology about Lux, then waited in the chair patiently for whatever was to happen next. Would he be tested in another way? Or did Team Vex already have the information they needed?

Eddy stiffened up as his boss spoke. Something about his voice made his hair stand on end. The trainer put his pokemon away and nox cleared his throat as he looked at the packet. Everything seemed in order, Type B personality, no aparent qualms about hurting anyone or stealing. Should be perfect, right? Well, minus his lack of a background in science or the fact that he probably wouldn't understand all the technicle mubo-jumbo, he should perform perfectly well.
"Well, Nox. It appears that you would be a good candidate for our 'Sleeper Gene' Project." he reached and once again pulled something out of the filing cabinet and handed it to the Grunt. It was a thick manilla folder labeled "Eyes Only". Eddy put on a stern face."This does not leave this room. If you are to discuss this with snyone else, THEY will initiate the conversation about it to you, got it?" The folder contained the basic info about the project, things such as when it was started, the first experiments, how they went, mission goals, future plans and the like. He looked over at Martyn, who nodded. "You're lucky today, If you have any questions you may ask the Boss." He thumbed over his shoulder at the man behind him, who was back on his papers again.

Nox nodded, eyes scanning the pages. Sleeper Gene, eh? That sounded... interesting. Odd. What was one of those? He knew all about genes and DNA; when he was a young boy, his doctor had told him all sorts about DNA; after all, his DNA had been knocked out of whack by radiation from the place he had been forced to work in at a young age, hence the occasional fur or feathers one might find on him. What did the 'Sleeper Gene' do? Was that literate, or just a codename?
Nox's eyes read carefully through the entire document. ((I think I know what's in it, but I won't mention it for the sake of those who prefer plots to be surprises)) He smiled, looking up at Eddy. That sounded pretty good to him, this project. And he would be involved. What an honour! "Thanks. I don't have any questions, except this one; am I ready to hear what my mission is?" he said.

Eddy began to tell Nox what his directives were, when Martyn cleared his throat behind him.
"Be sure to include ALL of them, Grunt." He said, not even bothering to acknowledge the look of terror on the mans face. Eddy sputtered.
"Um...Yessir!" He said, standing up to inform the grunt before him. ["You are to constantly be on the lookout for candidates for the 'Sleeper Gene', obtain said candidates along with any information you can get about where they came from so we know if we are to re-release them back from where they came!"/color] He went kinda of pale as he swallowed to say this last part. "You are also under Standing Orders to collect, gather, catalogue and report any informationa about any Rare or Legendary Pokemon you may hear about or see...
